Description
Apple Crisp is a cozy classic dessert with tender spiced apples topped with a crunchy oat streusel. It’s warm, comforting, and full of apple pie flavor without the fuss of pie dough, making it perfect for weeknights, gatherings, or holidays.
Ingredients
- Apple Layer:
- 4 cups (520g) peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith apples (about 4 medium apples, ¼-inch slices)
- 1/3 cup (67g) packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Oat Topping:
- 1 1/2 cups (120g) old-fashioned rolled oats
- 3/4 cup (90g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate or square baking pan.
- Apple layer: In the baking dish, toss apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and cinnamon until coated. Spread into an even layer.
- Topping: In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in butter with fingers until mixture is crumbly and holds together when pinched.
- Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.
- Place pan on a baking sheet to catch drips. Bake 45–55 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool 10–15 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
- Granny Smith apples give tartness, but Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Braeburn work too.
- Add chopped pecans or walnuts to topping for crunch.
- Mix in pears or berries with apples for variety.
- For gluten-free, use almond flour or a GF flour blend.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the best experience.
