Description

Apple Crisp is a cozy classic dessert with tender spiced apples topped with a crunchy oat streusel. It’s warm, comforting, and full of apple pie flavor without the fuss of pie dough, making it perfect for weeknights, gatherings, or holidays.

Ingredients

  • Apple Layer:
  • 4 cups (520g) peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith apples (about 4 medium apples, ¼-inch slices)
  • 1/3 cup (67g) packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Oat Topping:
  • 1 1/2 cups (120g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup (90g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate or square baking pan.
  2. Apple layer: In the baking dish, toss apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and cinnamon until coated. Spread into an even layer.
  3. Topping: In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in butter with fingers until mixture is crumbly and holds together when pinched.
  4. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.
  5. Place pan on a baking sheet to catch drips. Bake 45–55 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. Cool 10–15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples give tartness, but Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Braeburn work too.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to topping for crunch.
  • Mix in pears or berries with apples for variety.
  • For gluten-free, use almond flour or a GF flour blend.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the best experience.
