Ingredients
1/2 cup milk
3 tbsp heavy whipping cream
4 large eggs
2 tbsp agave syrup
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp chai spice*
8 slices day-old French bread
1 tbsp butter
2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp apple cider
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk milk, cream, eggs, agave, vanilla, and chai spice until smooth.
- Dip bread slices into egg mixture, then layer in the prepared baking pan, slightly overlapping. Drizzle any remaining mixture on top.
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Sauté apples for a few minutes until softened. Arrange them around the bread in the pan.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and the custard is set. Let cool slightly.
- Prepare glaze: whisk powdered sugar, apple cider, and cinnamon until smooth.
- Drizzle glaze over warm French toast before serving.
Notes
Use brioche or challah for a richer version.
Make chai spice at home using cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves.
Swap apples for pears or peaches for variation.
Replace agave with maple syrup if preferred.
Top with chopped nuts or caramel drizzle for extra indulgence.
Use day-old bread to prevent sogginess.
