Description
Delicious Chicago-style apple slices featuring a flaky buttery crust filled with a sweet and spiced apple mixture, perfect for a comforting dessert loved by all ages.
Ingredients
Crust
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4–5 tablespoons cold water
Filling
- 3 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect baking temperature for the crust and filling.
- Prepare crust mixture: In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the chilled unsalted butter and mix it in until the mixture becomes crumbly, resembling coarse crumbs.
- Form dough: Slowly stir in cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms a cohesive ball that is not sticky. Divide the dough into two equal portions.
- Roll out bottom crust: Roll out half of the dough on a floured surface to fit your baking dish. Carefully place the rolled dough into the dish, pressing to cover the bottom and sides.
- Make apple filling: In another bowl, combine the peeled and sliced apples with cinnamon, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat all the apple slices evenly with the spices and sugar.
- Add filling to crust: Spread the prepared apple mixture evenly over the bottom crust in the baking dish.
- Roll out top crust: Roll out the remaining half of the dough to cover the apple filling. Place it carefully on top, sealing the edges by pinching them together to lock in the filling securely.
- Vent and prepare for baking: Cut slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking, which will prevent sogginess and help the crust bake evenly.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Serve and store: Allow the apple slices to cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
Notes
- Use tart apple varieties such as Granny Smith for balanced flavor and texture.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgence.
