Description
These Coca-Cola Caramelized Onions are rich, sweet, and deeply flavorful, made by slowly cooking onions with Coca-Cola until perfectly golden and glossy. They’re an easy way to elevate burgers, steaks, sandwiches, or pizzas with gourmet flair and a subtle sweet-savory balance.
Ingredients
4 medium sweet onions, cut into 1/4-inch rings
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup Coca-Cola soft drink
Instructions
- Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings and separate the layers.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, onions, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat evenly.
- Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and turn translucent.
- Pour in the Coca-Cola and stir to combine.
- Continue cooking for another 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and most of the liquid has evaporated.
- Remove from heat once the onions are glossy, golden brown, and sticky. Serve immediately or cool and store for later use.
Notes
Add a splash of balsamic vinegar or Worcestershire sauce for extra depth.
Use cherry cola or Dr. Pepper for a flavor twist.
Substitute part of the Coke with brown sugar or honey for richer caramelization.
Cook over medium-low heat to avoid burning.
Butter can replace olive oil for a richer flavor.
Store in the refrigerator up to a week or freeze for up to 2 months.
