Description

A rich and creamy Brussels sprouts casserole made with tender sprouts, aromatic shallots, savory smoked turkey, and a blend of sharp cheddar and Gruyere cheeses, baked until melted and golden.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 oz smoked turkey bits, cooked and lightly crisped
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 lb Brussels sprouts, cleaned and halved
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sharp white cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the casserole later.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the minced shallots and garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant to infuse the butter with flavors.
  3. Cook Brussels Sprouts: Add the halved Brussels sprouts to the skillet and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become tender but still retain some bite.
  4. Season and Combine: Season the Brussels sprouts with salt, freshly ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, and mustard powder. Stir in the heavy cream thoroughly to create a creamy base.
  5. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the Brussels sprouts and cream mixture to a baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the crispy smoked turkey bits on top, followed by the shredded white cheddar and Gruyere cheeses.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese has melted and is lightly golden and bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm as a deliciously creamy and cheesy side dish.

Notes

  • You can prepare the casserole ahead of time and bake just before serving to save time.
  • Sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions can be added for extra depth and flavor.
  • For additional crunch, sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs on top before baking.
  • Frozen Brussels sprouts can be used if they are fully thawed and well-drained to avoid excess moisture.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
