Description

Sourdough French Toast is a custardy, tangy twist on the classic breakfast favorite. The hearty texture and slight tartness of sourdough bread balance perfectly with a sweet, spiced custard, creating a golden, flavorful dish that’s quick and cozy to make.

Ingredients

4 slices sourdough bread (about 1-inch thick)

2 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

Butter or oil, for cooking

Maple syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Whisk eggs in a large bowl until frothy, then add milk and mix until smooth.
  2. Stir in vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar (if using).
  3. Cut sourdough into thick slices.
  4. Dip each slice into the custard mixture, soaking about 30 seconds per side.
  5. Heat butter or oil in a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Cook slices for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Keep cooked slices warm in a 200°F (93°C) oven while finishing the batch.
  8. Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar.

Notes

Add nutmeg or cardamom for extra spice.

Swap half the milk for cream for a richer custard.

Try savory toppings like bacon, avocado, or fried eggs by omitting cinnamon and sugar.

French toast can be baked at 375°F until golden, flipping halfway.

Slightly stale sourdough works best since it absorbs custard well.
