Description

Southern Pie is a quintessential American dessert, bringing together the essence of homemade goodness. Known for its buttery, flaky crust and rich fillings, it’s the kind of dessert that brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort to every bite. This Southern Apple Pie recipe offers a perfect balance of sweetness and spice, making it a timeless classic.

Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

68 tablespoons ice water

6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced tart apples (Granny Smith works well)

¾ cup granulated sugar

¼ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional: Turbinado sugar for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough just comes together. Divide the dough into two disks, wrap them in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Let the mixture sit while you roll out the dough.
  3. On a floured surface, roll out one disk of dough into a 12-inch circle and place it into a 9-inch pie plate. Pour the apple filling into the crust.
  4. Roll out the second disk of dough and cover the pie, either with a full top crust or a lattice pattern. Trim the excess dough and crimp the edges to seal. Brush the top crust with beaten egg for a shiny finish and sprinkle with turbinado sugar for extra crunch and sparkle, if desired.
  5. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 40–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  6. Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing to allow the filling to set. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For a twist, try variations like Peach Pie, Pecan Pie, Mixed Berry Pie, or Sweet Potato Pie.

If you prefer a healthier version, you can use whole wheat flour for the crust.

The dough can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 3 months.

Make sure the pie cools for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set properly before slicing.
