Description

This Steak Rice Bowl is a rich and flavorful dish inspired by the Japanese Steak Donburi, featuring tender ribeye steak cooked to perfection and glazed with a bourbon-infused umami sauce. Served over fluffy white rice and garnished with scallions, sesame seeds, and a raw egg yolk, this recipe offers a delightful combination of savory and slightly sweet notes in an easy-to-make bowl meal.

Ingredients

Steak

  • 1 Large Ribeye or Strip Steak
  • 2 tbsp Cowboy Butter Rub
  • Neutral Oil as needed

Donburi Sauce

  • ½ cup Soy Sauce
  • ¼ cup Mirin
  • ¼ cup Bourbon
  • ¼ cup Sugar

Garnish

  • Egg Yolk
  • 1.5 cups Cooked White Rice
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Chopped Scallions or Chives

Instructions

  1. Simmer Sauce: Preheat a large skillet over medium low heat (about 300°F). Add the soy sauce, mirin, bourbon, and sugar to the skillet and simmer gently for 5-8 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare Steak: Lightly coat the steak with neutral oil and generously season it with the Cowboy Butter Rub for flavor and crust.
  3. Cook Steak: Increase the heat to medium-high (about 350°F). Place the steak in the skillet and cook for 6-8 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 120°F for medium-rare. Frequently baste the steak with the simmered bourbon sauce to build a rich glaze. Once cooked, remove the steak from the skillet and let it rest to retain juices.
  4. Assemble Bowl: Place cooked white rice in the center of a bowl. Thinly slice the rested steak and arrange the strips around the rice.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Add a raw egg yolk on top of the rice, sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped scallions or chives, and drizzle additional sauce over the bowl. Serve immediately and enjoy the savory umami flavors.

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure perfect steak doneness at 120°F for medium-rare.
  • The egg yolk adds creaminess and richness; ensure it is from a safe source if consuming raw.
  • Mirin can be substituted with a combination of sake and sugar if unavailable.
  • Resting the steak is crucial to keep the meat juicy and tender.
