Description

This Steak Sandwich is a hearty and satisfying meal that’s perfect for any occasion. Tender strips of steak paired with caramelized onions and melted Havarti cheese, all nestled in a buttery baguette – what’s not to love? The addition of herb butter enhances the flavor, giving this sandwich an extra layer of deliciousness. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply craving a tasty meal, this steak sandwich will hit the spot every time.

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for herb butter)

1 tbsp fresh dill, diced (for herb butter)

3 garlic cloves, crushed (for herb butter)

1 tbsp oil (for cooking steak)

1 lb steak (your choice of cut)

1 tbsp salt, adjust to taste (for steak)

1 large yellow onion

4 slices Havarti cheese

1 baguette

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened butter with crushed garlic and diced dill. Mix until everything is well incorporated, and set aside to prepare the herb butter.
  2. Slice the steak into thin strips. (Tip: To make slicing easier, freeze the steak for a few minutes before slicing.)
  3. Preheat a skillet with 1 tablespoon of oil over high heat. Add the sliced steak and season generously with salt. Cook until the steak is just golden, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Slice the onion into half rings. In the same skillet, sauté the onions until golden brown. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Slice the baguette lengthwise, and spread the herb butter on both sides.
  6. Layer the steak strips, caramelized onions, and Havarti cheese on the baguette.
  7. Keep the sandwich open and broil for about 2 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  8. Serve immediately, while it’s still warm.

Notes

If you prefer a different cheese, you can swap the Havarti with provolone, Swiss, or cheddar for a different flavor.

Add fresh arugula or spinach for a peppery crunch to balance the richness of the steak and cheese.

If you like heat, consider adding some jalapeños or a spicy sauce to the sandwich.
