Description

This Basic Homemade Hummus recipe is a smooth and creamy dip made from simple ingredients including chickpeas, tahini, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice. It comes together quickly in a food processor, making it a perfect healthy snack or appetizer that can be enjoyed immediately or stored for up to five days.

Ingredients

Hummus Ingredients

  • 15 ounces canned chickpeas, rinsed and juice reserved
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
  • 2-4 tablespoons juice from the can of chickpeas (aquafaba)

Instructions

  1. Blend Base Ingredients: Add the rinsed chickpeas, lemon juice, and tahini to a food processor. Blend these ingredients until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  2. Add Flavorings and Oil: Next, add the minced garlic, coarse sea salt, fresh cracked black pepper, and extra-virgin olive oil to the food processor. Blend for one minute to incorporate evenly.
  3. Adjust Consistency: Pour in 2 tablespoons of the reserved aquafaba (chickpea juice) and blend again for one minute. If the hummus is still too thick, add an additional tablespoon of the aquafaba and blend again. Repeat adding aquafaba until the desired creamy consistency is achieved.
  4. Serve or Store: Once smooth and well combined, serve the hummus immediately, or transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • For creamier hummus, peel the skins off the chickpeas before blending.
  • Adjust garlic and lemon juice quantities to taste for stronger or milder flavor.
  • The aquafaba helps achieve a silky texture but avoid adding too much to prevent it from becoming watery.
  • Garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, paprika, or chopped parsley for a beautiful presentation.
  • Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor results.
