Description
A warm, gooey bakery-style brunch casserole featuring flaky croissants, rich semi-sweet chocolate chips, and a sweet vanilla custard. This Chocolate Croissant Breakfast Bake is perfect for holidays, weekend brunches, or a cozy make-ahead breakfast that everyone will enjoy.
Ingredients
Croissant Layer
- 6–8 large croissants, cut into chunks
- 1½–2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Custard Mixture
- 2 cups whole milk
- 6 large eggs
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Optional Garnish
- Powdered sugar, for garnish
- Fresh berries or whipped cream
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Layer Croissants: Cut the croissants into chunks and evenly scatter them in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over and between the croissant layers to ensure even chocolate distribution.
- Make Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Assemble: Slowly pour the custard mixture over the croissants and chocolate chips. Gently press down on the croissant chunks to help them absorb the custard thoroughly.
- Bake: Place the dish uncovered in the oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown. If the top starts browning too quickly, tent with foil during the last 10–15 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning.
- Serve: Let the bake cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar. Serve warm with fresh berries or whipped cream, if desired, for an extra special touch.
Notes
- Slightly stale croissants absorb the custard best, enhancing texture.
- Can be assembled the night before and refrigerated overnight for a convenient make-ahead option.
- For a richer custard, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days to maintain freshness.
- Reheat leftovers in the microwave or oven until warmed through before serving.
