Description

This Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing is fresh, creamy, and tangy, providing a far superior taste to store-bought versions. Perfect for drizzling over fresh salads or serving as a dip for veggie trays, it combines the richness of buttermilk, sour cream, and mayonnaise with aromatic herbs and spices to create a versatile and flavorful dressing.

Ingredients

For the Dressing

  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup full-fat sour cream
  • ¼ cup good quality mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • ¾ teaspoon Morton kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, finely minced
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh dill
  • ⅛ teaspoon cumin
  • ⅛ teaspoon chili powder

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, minced garlic, kosher salt, black pepper, green onions, fresh dill, cumin, and chili powder. Whisk all the ingredients together until the mixture is smooth and well blended. Alternatively, place all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake thoroughly to mix.
  2. Taste and Adjust: Taste the dressing and adjust its thickness and seasoning to your preference. For a thinner dressing suitable for salads, add a little more buttermilk or milk. For a thicker consistency ideal for dipping, add extra sour cream.
  3. Chill: Cover the dressing tightly and refrigerate until ready to serve. It’s recommended to chill for at least an hour or more to allow the flavors to meld, but it can be made up to one day in advance.
  4. Serve: Serve chilled as a dressing over fresh greens or use as a dip for raw vegetables. Store leftovers in the refrigerator and consume within one week for best quality.

Notes

  • Doubling the recipe works well for entertaining or for having extra dressing to enjoy over several salads throughout the week.
  • Adjust the thickness by varying the amount of buttermilk or sour cream according to your desired consistency.
  • This dressing keeps well in the fridge for up to one week when stored properly in an airtight container.
