Ingredients
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 jalapeno, minced
- 1 medium green pepper, chopped
Liquids
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 cup beef broth or water
- 1 14 oz can crushed tomatoes
Spices and Seasonings
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp ground cumin
- 1/4 tsp ground cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Prepare the aromatics: Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking them for about 5 minutes or until they are tender and fragrant.
- Brown the beef: Add the ground beef to the pot. Use a spatula to break apart the meat and cook it thoroughly for about 10 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
- Add remaining ingredients: Stir in the minced jalapeno, chopped green pepper, beef broth or water, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chili powder, ground cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), black pepper, and salt, mixing everything well to combine.
- Simmer the chili: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for about 25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and help flavors meld.
- Season to taste and rest: Adjust seasonings as desired for spiciness or saltiness. After cooking, let the chili rest for a few minutes off the heat to enhance the flavors before serving.
